Front

Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken and Anna Lindgren are the members of the Swedish design group Front.

Their works are based on common discussions, explorations and experiments and they are all involved in the projects from initial ideas to the final product.
Front's design objects often communicate a story to the observer about the design process, about the material it is made of or about conventions within the design field.

In Cafe Tensta Konsthall, Front created an environment that changes with time. The interior design is inspired by the fact that most designs change with time; the surfaces get old and scratched, things are moved around or some of the objects get replaced. We saw this as an opportunity and created an interior with a built in change.

Mercury + Textiles...?

London based artist Steve Bishop's series As If You Could Kill Time Without Injuring Eternity are quantities of mercury framed. Mercury filters down, flows through and around scraps of cloth, mapping its own path. The compositions inevitably change during transportation, and when a piece is installed the metal settles temporarily, contingently, in an arrangement that is specific to each hanging. As If You Could Kill Time Without Injuring Eternity is a work in flux, attaining a temporary repose during the periods of its display, working under the influences of gravity.

Earth from Above

Born in 1946, Yann Arthus-Bertrand has always been fond of nature. It was in the late 70s, in Kenya, while studying with his wife Anne the every day life of a pride of lions that, that he truly became a photographer. He understood that he had to tell the facts through images rather than words. He also discovered the beauty of the world seen from above when he became a hot air balloon pilot and began experimenting aerial photography.

Started in 1994, the “Earth from Above” project was born from Yab’s dream for a general survey on the state of the Earth at the eve of the 21st century... an in depth project involving quite considerable means as well as a truly rigorous approach, that could only materialize through the passion and determination of the whole team. The team has been to over 150 countries to date, photographs of thousands of sites have been taken, and it still monopolizes a great deal of time and energy from all involved.

Shannon Rankin

She does incredible instillation art and patterns using cut up maps. Her portfolio is definitely worth looking through. Picture has a link to it.

Ben Newman

I love his mask paintings. There is so much interesting details and references in them.
Click the picture to go to his blog to see other artwork he does.

Up There

...only 12 minutes long and really interesting!

'Up There' is a short documentary on the demise of hand-painted billboard advertisements; a film commissioned by Stella Artois and directed by Malcolm Murray.

It’s a story of technological change making hard earned skills nearly obsolete, and of the few hold outs who won’t let the trade die completely.

Capturing a profession that is equal parts precision and gruelling labour, the film reveals the painter's artistry, and their enduring passion for the wall-painting tradition.

Ruth Adler-Schnee

Jeremy referenced Ruth Adler-Schnee to me in class one day and I thought her style is very fun and contemporary, even though she was most popular in the mid 1900's. Check it out!

This jewelry designer is so interesting! She uses old barbies and creates one of a kind and commercial jewelry. Definitely not for the fashion timid!

Allison Berg's Art Blog

Here are some really cool patterns that are pretty much all text. I really like the use of text or font or letters in patterns. I think it is an interesting way to get a point across or message if needed but be able to disguise it.

Claire-Anne O'Brien

British textile designer Claire-Anne O'Brien has created a collection of stools that feature a variety of knitted seat cushions. A clever rethinking of what form the ordinary stool may take.

Sara Blake

Here are some floral images created by one of my favorite illustrators, Sara Blake. I like how fantastical and dreamlike her style is. Her work definitely conveys a strong sense of mood which is something I am striving to achieve in my own floral illustrations.

Mara Hoffman

Topographic map-inspired prints from Mara Hoffman's Spring 2009 collection. It's interesting how she used a non-traditional motif in a pattern without making it look like a kitschy novelty print. The first image reminds me of one of the Liberty of London prints that Jeremy showed us in class a few weeks ago.

Orchid

Coming back from class a few days ago I was greeted by this projection of my orchid on the wall. It looked much better in real-life but the photo gives you a general idea of what it looked like. I think it's beautiful how the image repeats itself. This is the same orchid I've been sketching for the next floral repeat pattern. After seeing this I think I might have to change my motif. I love the simplicity of the orchid's silhouette and also the subtle changes in tone the shadow makes.

Emilio Pucci

Emilio Pucci's prints from the 1960's are absolutely gorgeous and mesmerizing. I especially love his bold use of color.
